Multi tier planting
Multi tier planting sets out a block in layers that grow at different speeds: a slow native canopy, fast growing biomass rows cut on a short cycle, and an understory of crops. The fast layers earn early and pay for the protection the slow layer needs.
A single species establishes quickly and carries a single risk. Layers spread that risk across different species and different cycles.
Layers also work the soil at different depths, which is most of why the ground improves rather than merely being covered.
